Sky Bet Championship side Aston Villa is set to battle Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion for Zamalek striker Basem Morsy, according to ESPN.

The 25-year-old forward is currently plying his trade in his native country of Egpyt for Zamalek who currently sit third in the Egyptian Premier League.

The prolific goalscorer has been one of the most consistent goalscorers outside of Europe which has attracted the attention of a number of clubs primarily from England.

Premier League side Stoke City have accessed the Egyptian market in the past, and Basem Morsy is the latest Egyptian name on their radar as they look to add more firepower.

However, Stoke City will face competition from West Brom and Championship side Aston Villa who have also monitored the Egyptian international.

Aston Villa have funds to spend in the January transfer window and will be hoping they can persuade Morsy to join their club as they look to mount a play-off bid in the second half of the season.

Although it has been suggested that Jordan Rhodes would naturally be Rudy Gestede's replacement, Basem Morsy could potentially be the cheaper alternative for Steve Bruce.

Aston Villa fans, what do you make of the news? Would you like to see Basem Morsy join your side? Is Morsy the calibre of signing Aston Villa needs to be making? Do you feel your side needs to add more firepower? Would Morsy be a good replacement for Gestede or should Villa concentrate their efforts on Jordan Rhodes?
