Aston Villa will not be signing Tom Carroll after the midfielder suffered an injury-hit loan spell with the club.

The former Spurs man joined Villa from Swansea in January and was hoping to play an important role for Dean Smith's men as they pushed for promotion.

However, he managed just two substitute appearances before requiring a hip operation, with Villa confirming in April that he had returned to Swansea following the setback.

Therefore, it came as no real surprise when Birmingham Live revealed that the west Midlands outfit would not be pursuing another move for the 27-year-old in the summer.

The report also states that it leaves Carroll in a difficult position as the Welsh side are looking to cut costs significantly as they prepare for a second year in the Championship and he may have to move on.

Having beaten Derby at Wembley in the play-off final on Monday, it's sure to be a very busy few months for Villa as Smith looks to build a squad that is capable of competing in the top-flight.

The Verdict

This is a sensible decision from Villa and it's no surprise at all because Carroll isn't good enough for where they want to be going.

You do have to feel sorry for the midfielder though, because he would've backed himself to make an impression if he hadn't picked up that injury.

But, that's football and Villa will be looking elsewhere as they search for the quality needed to help them in the Premier League.
