Sheffield United have been trying for new additions for much of the summer, and following the sale of David Brooks, were expected to go out and splash some cash on a new forward.

However, despite sealing a £4m deal for John Egan and snapping up David McGoldrick on a free transfer, manager Chris Wilder has so far been unsuccessful it would seem in his attempts to add more quality to his forward line.

The Blades have been linked with a host of players, including Ipswich striker Martyn Waghorn, but even with money to spend, it appears United could be priced out of a move for Waghorn, with both Derby and Middlesbrough looking to spend big on him.

News today of another Blades target in Ben Woodburn reportedly being targeted by Aston Villa is yet another indication of the level of competition the Blades are up against, and it will be hard for many United fans to really believe that their club will beat Villa to the punch and sign Woodburn.

It is this sort of thing which truly represents how hard a task Wilder is facing. Even when armed with funds, he is finding himself priced out of moves for top players, as there is little doubting that the moves for both Woodburn and Waghorn will ultimately come down to money, both for the clubs, and player.

It makes last seasons' tenth place finish all the more impressive, and while many Blades remain optimistic about the season ahead, there is a sense of some sort of reality needed if things don't quite go to plan.

The Championship is a big spending league nowadays, and if Wilder can guide United once again to within touching distance of the playoffs, then it should well be considered a job well done, not a failure.
