Aston Villa plotting shock move for Premier League striker to bolster frontline

Roberto Di Matteo’s Aston Villa are plotting to make a shock move for West Bromwich Albion’s veteran striker Rickie Lambert, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The 34-year-old striker has fallen out of favour at West Brom since making the move from Liverpool. Lambert may feel that for the sake of his career, he may need to move again this summer.

It is looking likely that Tony Pulis may overhaul his squad, and one potential victim of this overhaul could well be Rickie Lambert which would suggest that Lambert is available.

The availability of Rickie Lambert will have alerted the attention of a number of Championship sides, however the current front runners are recently relegated Aston Villa.

As not only a vastly experienced striker but having the priceless experience of gaining promotion to the Premier League after playing a pivotal role in Southampton’s rise, Lambert could be an ideal signing for Roberto Di Matteo.

As Aston Villa has been linked with Dwight Gayle, Ross McCormack and James Wilson, it is clear that Roberto Di Matteo is looking to bolster his attacking ranks and add goals to the side.

Rickie Lambert would be a completely different option but Di Matteo is impressed by Lambert’s positive influence off the field and may look to bring him in as Lambert’s leadership qualities may be useful to have at the Italian’s disposal.

Aston Villa fans, how do you feel about the news? Would Rickie Lambert be a good signing? Is he the calibre of signing you’d like to see the club making? Would Lambert be effective in the Championship? Should Villa look elsewhere, if so, who should Di Matteo look to bring in? Let us hear your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below!
