Aston Villa could look to the Premier League to add to their side this January.

The Daily Mail reports that Dean Smith’s side are interested in taking Everton outcast James McCarthy.

But Villa won’t be mounting a challenge for the services of the 28-year-old, with Premier League sides Bournemouth and Fulham interested, while Championship side West Brom have also thrown their name into the ring.

The Republic of Ireland international has failed to play a game this season having recently recovered from a double leg break and was most recently on the bench for last weekend’s FA Cup third round win over Lincoln City.

With the player back to fitness, a loan move away could be sanctioned to allow McCarthy game time to get up to full fitness for the rest of the campaign.

And with his return, interest in the player will now be considered from the triumvirate of clubs involved.

The verdict

This could be a potential masterclass by Aston Villa if they can beat Premier League clubs for the temporary acquisition of the Everton man.

Having been out long-term, McCarthy will be rusty and could benefit from a loan move to the Championship, as opposed to the top flight.

Bournemouth look to be the favourites for his signature, but you shouldn’t rule out the history and heritage of a club like Aston Villa who could well be onto a winner if they can snap up the Republic of Ireland international.
