Aston Villa remain keen on Brentford's Said Benrahma and they could return with another big bid for the attacking midfielder when the January window opens.
Dean Smith, who has worked with the 24-year-old at Griffin Park before, wanted to bring Benrahma to Villa in the summer following their promotion to the Premier League.
However, a deal could not be reached, with the Bees believed to be demanding around £20m for their influential playmaker.
And, they could face a battle to keep hold of Benrahma in the New Year as Sky Sports have revealed that Villa still have a strong interest in the player.
Adding creativity will be a priority for Smith in the window as his side are very reliant on Jack Grealish in their fight for survival.
The former Nice man hasn't hit the same heights as last season in terms of goals and assists, registering just two of each this campaign, although he is still a key player for Thomas Frank's side.
Benrahma played 80 minutes as Brentford beat Reading to go within two points of the play-offs today.
The verdict
This isn't really a surprise as Villa wanted to sign the player towards the end of the summer window and they didn't manage to get an alternative in.
From the Bees perspective, it's a massive worry and losing Benrahma would significantly damage their chances of promotion.
But, we all know they are a club that sells if the price is right and you can imagine Villa will be happy to throw money at them in January as they look to survive, so it's a deal you can see happening.
