Aston Villa are keen on bringing Huddersfield defender Terence Kongolo to Villa Park as Dean Smith looks to add to his squad ahead of their Premier League return.
The Dutch defender joined the Terriers on a permanent basis last year for a club-record fee from Monaco but like most of his teammates he endured a tough season as the Yorkshire outfit were relegated.
However, the former Feyenoord man could be about to seal an immediate return to the top-flight with Football Insider reporting that the 25-year-old is high on Villa’s wanted list.
They state that Kongolo’s versatility appeals to Smith as he can play at left-back or centre-back.
That is similar to Tyrone Mings and it appears that Kongolo could be an alternative to the Bournemouth man who spent the end of last season on loan at Villa Park given the similarities between the pair.
Mings was crucial to Villa’s promotion after joining in January and established himself as a fans favourite with his performances and a permanent deal did seem inevitable but it still hasn’t happened.
You would expect Kongolo to move on from Huddersfield this summer as he clearly has the ability to play at a higher level than the Championship.
And, Villa would be a good option for the player, although you would expect Mings to be their number one target given his successful loan.
Either way, Huddersfield will need to hold out for a big fee for Kongolo and the money he brings in could allow Jan Siewert to reinvest elsewhere.
