Aston Villa are looking to do a late deal for Swansea City's Leroy Fer, with the midfielder a target for Dean Smith.

The former PSV man is out of contract in the summer and whilst the Welsh club are keen on keeping him, they know this is their last chance to get a fee for the player.

Therefore, they may be tempted to cash in before the 11pm deadline tonight and Sun reporter Mike McGrath has revealed that Villa are keen on the player.

However, the West Midlands side face competition to land the 29-year-old, with Fenerbahce and Lille credited with an interest in the Dutch international.

Fer has been a regular for Graham Potter's Swansea side this season, playing 24 games in the league and scoring one goal.

And, he has impressed on the whole, with his displays earning a lot of praise from supporters this season.

Villa fans may be excited at the prospect of this too, after Fer starred during the Swans convincing 3-0 victory at Villa Park in the FA Cup at the start of the month.

The Verdict

This would be a great signing for Villa and one that they need to finalise before the deadline.

Fer is a quality operator in the Championship and has qualities that would seriously improve Smith's side, with his combination of pace, power and good technical ability.

Whether Swansea will sell remains to be seen but the contract situation means Villa should be able to strike a deal.
