Aston Villa have put Ahmed Elmohamady, Mile Jedinak and Glenn Whelan up for sale amid uncertainty about the club's financial situation, The Times reports.

The bad news keeps piling up at Villa after their failure to win promotion via the play-offs resulted in some serious financial worries.

Chairman Dr. Tony Xia has been looking for a buyer, CEO Keith Wyness has been suspended by the club, John Terry has not been handed a new contract and loan stars Sam Johnstone and Robert Snodgrass will not return after their 1-0 loss against Fulham at Wembley.

Now, The Times are reporting that Villa still owe £11m in transfer fees to three clubs: Brentford, Fulham and West Bromwich Albion.

Brentford are owed £3m for the final part of Scott Hogan's sale, £6m needs to go to Fulham for flop Ross McCormack and West Brom need £2m still from the James Chester transfer fee.

In order to fund this, Aston Villa have sensationally put three of their key players up for sale to lower the wage bill and generate some funds.

Elmohamady teamed up with Bruce last year after joining from Hull but the right-back can now leave, while central midfielders Jedinak and Whelan are also on the transfer list despite featuring in most games this season.

The Verdict

It is peculiar how fine margins play such a key role in the future: had Villa gone up, none of this would be a concern.

Both Whelan and Jedinak have been instrumental to Villa's success and it is hard to see how they can be replaced with little money to work with.

Meanwhile, Elmohamady was unspectacular but he provided versatility, experience and a solid option at right-back - will he attract a buyer, though?
