According to the Birmingham Mail, Tommy Elphick is expected to leave Aston Villa during the January transfer window, with the defender currently weighing up options surrounding his future.

Elphick joined Villa following their relegation from the Premier League in 2016, becoming one of Roberto Di Matteo’s number of signings during his short spell in-charge at Villa Park.

However, the defender was limited to just 26 appearances last season, falling out of favour under Di Matteo’s successor, Steve Bruce.

This season, the 30-year-old’s nightmare has continued after he failed to secure a summer move away from Villa Park, finding himself behind the likes of John Terry, James Chester and Chris Samba in the pecking order.

Elphick has made just three appearances across all competitions this season, including featuring as a substitute in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Millwall at Villa Park, with Bruce forced to turn to the former AFC Bournemouth defender due to a lengthy injury list.

However, despite a recent appearance, the defender is weighing up his options heading into the January transfer window, with the Birmingham Mail expecting the 30-year-old to leave Villa Park, despite having 18 months left on his contract.

The Verdict

It is hardly a surprise to learn Elphick is heading for the Aston Villa exit door, as he is clearly not in Bruce’s plans, with the Villa Park boss reluctant to use the 30-year-old.

It seems best for all parties if they go their separate ways in the New Year.

The likelihood is that Elphick will have a number of options in the Championship, as prior to his Aston Villa nightmare, he had built up a strong reputation.
