Hull City are attempting to hijack Queens Park Rangers’ efforts to sign Tommy Elphick, with the Tigers making an offer to take the Aston Villa centre-back on loan.

Elphick looks like he will be leaving Villa Park between now and tomorrow’s transfer deadline, having found himself pushed down the pecking order once again in the Midlands.

According to Sky Sports’ Transfer Centre (30/08, 13:25), Hull are now in the race to sign Elphick, with Nigel Adkins’ side rivalling QPR for the 30-year-old’s signature.

Steve Bruce is happy for Elphick to leave Villa Park, but Villa plan to let the player decide himself what step he takes next.

Elphick has been at Villa Park for just over two years, but has failed to find his best form in claret and blue.

The defender has made just 31 Championship appearances for Villa in that two year spell, even spending the second-half of last season on loan with Reading, as his parent-club pushed for promotion.

So far this season, Elphick has made three appearances, but hasn’t featured in the Championship since the opening day of the season, when he scored in a 3-1 victory over Hull.

The Verdict

Elphick is a talented defender, who is rightly attracting interest at this stage of the summer.

For Hull or QPR, he’d be a good signing, with it easy to see why Adkins and Steve McClaren both want him on board.

The decision sitting with the 30-year-old is a big one for the player and all clubs involved.
