Aston Villa midfielder Mile Jedinak has announced today that he is to make an immediate retirement from the Australian national team.

The holding player went to the World Cup with his nation in the summer as they faced eventual winners France in the group stage.

He proved a solid base for the Socceroos, too, but those days now appear to be behind him with him confirming the news on his Instagram account.

A player that served his country with great distinction, he'll certainly be remembered fondly by his countrymen.

Now, he'll be looking to prolong his club career for as long as possible with Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce opting to use him as a centre-half a lot this season.

That decision has been met with heavy criticism from sections of the Villa support, too, but at the moment Jedinak remains in that position.

The Verdict

Jedinak is a reliable player who always puts an honest shift in.

Many do not feel he has been given a good deal playing at centre-half this year but, as is typical for a player of his character, he continues to work hard and do what is asked of him.
