Aston Villa caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald has revealed that the club are looking to appoint their new manager 'quickly' and that he will probably be watching the match at Millwall on Saturday, report the Birmingham Mail

MacDonald is currently the club's youth team manager but has been tasked with managing the first team for the trip to London by Chief Executive Christian Purslow.

"The chief executive phoned me up and said he'd got rid of Steve and the rest of his staff and he asked me if I'd take care of the team," MacDonald said.

"He did say they were hopeful of doing it reasonably quickly.

"I think we all know that the manager who is taking the job will have people there watching the game."

Bruce was relieved of his duties on Wednesday afternoon after a 3-3 draw at home to bottom club Preston North End at Villa Park put the final nail in his coffin.

The club currently sit 13th in the league after 11 games with the second worst defensive record in the division.

They have conceded 18 goals this season with only Preston North End shipping more this season which was ultimately Bruce's downfall.

David Moyes is the current favourite to succeed him as manager with Brentford boss Dean Smith and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry also linked.

The verdict

It is good that the board plan on bringing in Bruce's replacement soon but you just hope that they have actually put some thought into it and have planned who to bring in for a while.

You feel it is important that whoever comes in knows the league reasonably well and that now is probably not the time for an inexperienced boss like Henry to be brought in.
