Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton is unhappy that the club have revealed he won’t be getting a new deal at the end of the season.

The Scotland international is out of contract in the summer and Villa recently told the defender they wouldn’t be extending his stay at the club.

The Mirror are reporting that this has left Hutton ‘shocked and disappointed’ given how he has featured regularly for the side this season.

Even though he has spent most of the season out of position at left-back, the 33-year old has made 21 appearances in the league and played the full game last night as Villa recorded another win, and clean sheet, at Sheffield United.

The report adds that Villa are happy letting the former Rangers man go because they are looking to make cut-backs due to FFP and Hutton will be commanding a fairly hefty wage.

Another reason given is the number of options that Steve Bruce has in Hutton’s natural right-back position. James Bree and Ahmed Elmohamady are currently at Villa Park whilst they’ve just sent Richie De Laet out on loan.

The Verdict

Alan Hutton deserves huge praise for the way he has fought back into the team at Villa and for how he is playing now, but the decision makes sense.

If Villa go up, there will be serious question marks about whether he can play in the top-flight given his age, whereas in the Championship they will be looking to cut costs.

All Hutton can do is help Villa get promoted and that will certainly catch the eye of others when he looks for a new club in the summer.
