Aston Villa have decided to recall Jed Steer from his loan spell with Charlton as Dean Smith looks to ease his goalkeeping worries for tomorrow's clash with QPR.

The Championship side lost Orjan Nyland for the remainder of the season yesterday after he injured his Achilles.

With new signing Lovre Kalinic unable to feature against the R's it means that experienced stopper Mark Bunn was the only senior keeper at the club.

However, he will be challenged for his place by Steer who had been enjoying a very successful loan spell with Charlton.

The former Norwich man has played 19 times for the Addicks this season and helped them into a play-off place after joining in the summer.

Steer was out of favour under former boss Steve Bruce but it appears that Smith is willing to give him a chance.

Although, new signing Kalinic, who is a Croatian international, seems sure to be the number one once he is eligible to play.

Villa will be looking to close the five-point gap that they trail sixth place Derby by with victory against Steve McClaren's men tomorrow.

The Verdict

This is a good move from Smith as Steer is a good keeper - as he has shown whilst with Charlton.

It was a surprise to see him leave in the summer as many felt he was a more suitable backup than Bunn but Bruce made the decision.

Now, it's down to Steer to try and compete and put Kalinic under pressure for that number one spot.
