Aston Villa looking to bolster attack with signing of 25-year-old striker

New Aston Villa boss Roberto Di Matteo has identified Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle as the man to fire the Villains towards an instant return to the Premier League, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The 25-year-old has fallen way down the pecking order with Palace this season and if the club make him available for transfer, the new Villa boss is set to pounce as he sets about rebuilding his squad.

Gayle knows all about playing in the Championship and netted 13 times in 29 games for Peterborough United before making a £4.5 million switch to the Eagles in 2013, where he has been used sparingly ever since.

A natural-born finisher, Gayle must know that he needs to move on if he is to play regular first-team football and with Villa crying out for a striker, the move could work well for both parties.

Villa are not the only interested club in the services of Gayle and fellow relegated clubs Norwich City and Newcastle United are also looking into the possibility of signing the lively talisman.

Aston Villa fans, what do you know about Gayle? Will he be a good fit for Villa? Can he fire the club to promotion? Let us know in the comments below!
