Aston Villa join chase for influential Euro 2016 midfield star

Cardiff City midfielder and Iceland captain Aron Gunnarsson is being closely monitored by Roberto Di Matteo and Aston Villa, as they consider a move for the 27-year-old, according to The Sun.

Gunnarsson actually found himself in and out of the Cardiff side last season, but a memorable summer with his national side at Euro 2016 has hugely boosted his reputation and it now seems Aston Villa regard him as a player who could improve their chances of making an immediate return to the top-flight.

Villa have made a woeful start to the season with two defeats and it seems clear that there is a great deal of transfer activity still to do. Di Matteo looks like he’s now looking towards bringing in players with Championship experience, and Gunnarsson would certainly fit the bill, having made 183 appearances for the Bluebirds, and 123 for Coventry City before that.

Whether Cardiff will be willing to let their man go remains to be seen, but it promises to be a busy couple of weeks at Villa Park.
