Aston Villa handed significant boost ahead of big Derby County test

Aston Villa face a crucial game against Derby this weekend and they have been boosted by the return of Birkir Bjarnason.

The Icelandic midfielder went off during the first-half of the 1-0 loss to QPR just under two weeks ago and missed the win over Bolton as a result.

However, the club confirmed on twitter this afternoon that he is fit and available as Dean Smith’s men travel to Pride Park looking to close the gap on the top six.

The former Basel man will give Dean Smith an additional option in the middle of the park and his experience and ability on the ball could be needed against the Rams.

Bjarnason is likely to be competing with Glenn Whelan and Conor Hourihane for the chance to partner John McGinn, with the former Hibs man a certain starter after an impressive start to the campaign.

Villa will be seeking back-to-back wins for the first time under Smith as they look to reduce the five-point gap between them and Nottingham Forest who currently sit sixth.

The Verdict

This is good news for Smith and Villa as they have an extremely difficult run of fixtures coming up and they need everyone fit.

The new boss has a big decision to make as to whether Bjarnason should start but he’s a very useful option to have even if it is from the bench.

After a slow start with the club, he has proven himself to be a good player at this level.

Thoughts, Villa fans? Should Bjarnason start? Let us know in the comments below.
