Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton is prepared to take a pay-cut to stay at the club with his contract set to expire in the coming weeks.

Given Villa's financial situation it was expected that the former Scotland international, who earns £15,000 a week, would leave the club.

And, he had already been linked with several club's including Middlesbrough and former club Rangers, who are interested in picking him up on a free.

However, the Mirror report that the experienced full-back would be prepared to take a wage drop in order to extend his stay at Villa Park.

They state that Hutton is settled in the area with a young family, which is why he is happy to stay at the club.

That news would surely go down well with Villa supporters, with the former Spurs man emerging as a fans favourite this season for his attitude and strong displays.

Hutton has been at Villa since 2011, although he spent several years out on loan after failing to establish himself in the side.

The Verdict

If a deal can be done then Villa would be mad not to as Hutton has proven that he is still a very good player at this level.

Going from his comments, an agreement shouldn't be too hard to come by and it would suit all parties.

Despite Villa's financial situation they are going to need to build a competitive squad and keeping Hutton would be a smart move.
