Glenn Whelan, Alan Hutton and Axel Tuanzebe are all set to be unavailable for Aston Villa this weekend against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Villa’s official Twitter account (@AVFCOfficial) moved to share an update on the trio this morning, confirming that they were set to miss Saturday’s huge clash at Villa Park.

Hutton and Tuanzebe have been unavailable due to hamstring injuries recently, with the defensive duo once again expected to be sidelined against the Sky Bet Championship leaders this weekend.

The duo are joined on the sidelines by Whelan, who was forced from the field during the midweek victory over Sunderland, with a calf problem.

Whelan has started Villa’s last two Championship fixtures, but will be missing this weekend due to his calf problem.

Steve Bruce’s side welcome Wolves to Villa Park for an eagerly anticipated clash, with Villa looking to claw another rival back in the race for automatic promotion.

That race is gathering pace as we head into the run-in, with Villa currently sitting third and just four points adrift of Cardiff City ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures.

The Verdict

This weekend’s clash with Wolves is arguably Villa’s biggest of the season so far, so to not have players like Hutton and Whelan available is a blow.

Bruce has put a lot of faith in Hutton this season, with the defender impressive at both right-back and left-back.

Likewise with Whelan, Bruce has had a lot of faith in the midfielder in recent weeks, handing him a leading role in midfield.

Whoever steps into their shoes has a big role to fill.
