Aston Villa defender Tommy Elphick is a target for Championship strugglers Reading, according to a report in the Express, via the Sun.

The Royals are desperate to complete a deal for Elphick as they look to bolster their ranks before the end of the transfer window this week, and see the Villa man as the ideal sort of signing who can come in and solidify an ailing backline.

Elphick was one of the standout performers for Premier League Bournemouth during his time with the Cherries, and when he completed his move to Villa 18 months ago, many thought he would go on to skipper the Villans back to the Premier League.

However, things have not worked out for the £5m signing at Villa Park, and he looks to be heading for the exit door under Steve Bruce, with Reading now keen to pounce and wrap up a deal for Elphick.

The Royals have been struggling this season following last season's run to the playoff final, and were soundly beaten by Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup on Friday night at Hillsborough. Manager Jaap Stam has been coming under increased pressure, and will be desperate to see Elphick sign on the dotted line and help guide the Royals away from the dropzone.

Reading and Villa fans, what do you think to this? Good move? Let us know in the comments!
