Tommy Elphick is still expected to join Reading in a permanent transfer this summer.

According to the Mirror’s live transfer blog (20:06, 09:17), Elphick is expected to leave Aston Villa before next season to link back up with Reading, who he spent time with on-loan last season.

After a difficult first 18 months at Villa Park, Steve Bruce opted to move Elphick out on-loan last January, after just six appearances during the first-half of the season.

Reading swooped to secure the 30-year-old’s service on a temporary contract.

Elphick’s spell at the Madejski Stadium was plagued by injury, however, with the defender limited to just four appearances in blue and white.

The centre-back did return to stat Reading’s final game of the Championship season, with Elphick helping Paul Clement’s side to a goalless draw with Cardiff City, which secure their Championship status for 2018/19.

Reading a expected to make Elphick’s loan deal permanent this summer, giving the 30-year-old a fresh start away from Villa Park.

Elphick agreed a three-year contract with Villa back in 2016, but has managed just 32 appearances in claret and blue.

The Verdict

Elphick’s spell with Aston Villa has been extremely disappointing, with the defender struggling to adapt to life at Villa Park.

A loan move to Reading offered Elphick a chance to get back on track, and despite a limited impact at the Madejski, he seems to have done enough to warrant a permanent move.

Back at his best, Elphick will be a very good addition for Reading, who are looking to put a difficult 12 months behind them.
