Aston Villa's Andre Green, currently on loan in League One with Portsmouth, has been reflecting on the injury lay off that has restricted him to just three appearances.

Green made a handful of outings for Villa before the switch to Fratton Park, but after just two outings, one in the Checkatrade Trophy and one in League One, he underwent surgery ruling him out for two months.

He returned to action this week as Pompey faced Tottenham Under 21s in the trophy, scoring in a 3-2 win. He's hoping to now put the injury-nightmare behind him, although he revealed it was his choice to undergo surgery.

"It (the injury) wasn’t that bad at all – I thought I could play," he told the Portsmouth News. ‘I wanted to give 100 per cent to Portsmouth and show them just how good that I was. I want to have the best chance to impress and show what I can do."

Once the 20-year-old realised he wasn't the best version of himself, he made the tough decision.

"It was getting to a point where I knew it wasn’t 100 per cent and I only had a few weeks out. A few weeks out is better than long term and I had to get it done. If you go under the knife, then it’s something I knew was there. It wasn’t a little niggling thing."

Green is now hoping to help fend off the attention of Sunderland at the top of the table as Portsmouth hunt a Championship return.

The Verdict

Green should be a big player for Pompey, but he'll have his work cut out dislodging Jamal Lowe or Ronan Curtis.

He'll be a regular one way or another though, he has too much quality to leave on the bench. His return will be a boost for Kenny Jackett at a time when Sunderland are truly turning up the heat.
