Aston Villa's crucial win over local rivals Birmingham City in the Second City derby was marred by an unsavoury incident involving Jack Grealish.

Grealish was assaulted by a Birmingham supporter who entered the field of play early into the game on Sunday afternoon.

Villa's talisman was seemingly unharmed during the assault and responded in the best way possible, which went down well with the supporters that travelled.

Grealish netted the winner as he fired past Lee Camp from a tight angle to open the scoring on the day, to spark jubilant scenes amongst the supporters in the away end.

The fan in question is Paul Mitchell, and he has since pleaded guilty to the charge of assault that he faced the same day after committing the offence.

It remains to be seen as to whether Birmingham will face any punishment over the incident which certainly stole the headlines on the day.

It's likely that the Blues are going to be hit with a hefty fine, and there need to be questions raised into the standard of the stewards currently at the club.

At no point, should there be a supporter that is able to enter the field of play, and he could have done some serious damage to Grealish if he had connected better with the Villa player.

If you're a Villa supporter, as well as any other supporter, you're going to be wanting the book to be thrown at Birmingham over the incident.

The EFL should certainly be considering forcing Birmingham to play a game behind closed doors, as this would surely stamp out this issue in the future.

A points deduction seems highly unlikely, but Blues fans will be sweating over the prospect of that, as if that was to happen, then it could all but end their faint hopes of reaching the top six by the end of the season.

It's sure to be an interesting week ahead, and Birmingham supporters have every right to be feeling nervous about the outcome of the EFL's investigation.
