Aston Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer has shared his thoughts after the club secured their return to the Premier League after beating Derby County in the Championship play-off final.

Steer was the club's hero in the semi-final during their penalty shoot-out win against West Brom but had relatively little to do at Wembley.

Writing on Twitter alongside two photographs of him with the trophy, the shot-stopper said: "We are Premier League! Thank you for all your support this season ????????????"

Anwar El Ghazi gave Dean Smith's side the lead just before half-time on Monday after Ahmed El Mohamady's cross ricocheted kindly off his back.

And it was 2-0 just ten minutes into the second half when Derby goalkeeper Kelle Roos came unconvincingly for the ball and John McGinn capitalised, heading home a second.

Derby threatened a come back late on when a good turn and shot from substitute Jack Marriott flicked off the foot of Martyn Waghorn but it was not enough.

The verdict

Steer's contribution this season has been as admirable if not more admirable than anyone else's in the Villa squad.

He was basically cast out as not good enough by Steve Bruce and Dean Smith who both signed what they thought would be first-choice goalkeepers.

But when Steer stayed professional and when he got his chance he stepped up impressively.
