According to the Shields Gazette, Financial Fair Play could play a huge role in Aston Villa’s attempt to sign Lewis Grabban during the January transfer window.
Reports have emerged over the course of the weekend that Villa are keen to striker a deal for Grabban in January, with AFC Bournemouth able to recall the on-loan Sunderland striker in the New Year.
The Premier League club could call Grabban back to Bournemouth, which could potentially open the door for a permanent move away from the club, with the likes of Villa and Fulham reportedly keen.
However, Villa’s FFP struggles have been well documented, with the club limited in their spending over the course of the summer.
FFP could once again play a role in Villa’s attempts to sign Grabban in January, with Steve Bruce’s side potentially only able to offer the striker another loan move, albeit with a promotion bonus and opportunity to join permanently in the summer.
So far this season Grabban has impressed for Sunderland in the Sky Bet Championship, with the 29-year-old scoring 11 goals and proving to be a shining light for Sunderland – who are at centre stage of another relegation fight.
Aston Villa’s form is a stark contrast to Sunderland’s form, with Bruce’s side challenging for the top-six.
The Verdict
It is easy to see why Villa are keen on Grabban, with the striker in excellent form, however, FFP could scupper any potential deal between them and Bournemouth.
Whilst Villa and Sunderland are having contrasting seasons in the Championship this year, Bournemouth might be happy with Grabban continuing at the Stadium of Light on-loan, where he is playing regular football.
There are doubts whether Grabban would play as regularly at Villa Park, whilst Villa cannot offer direct money for the striker, which could put Bournemouth off any transfer.
