Aston Villa have the option to recall Jed Steer from his loan spell with Charlton Athletic in January.

Steer started Villa’s first game of the season, with Steve Bruce handing the goalkeeper the gloves for the 3-1 victory over Hull City.

Despite impressing, Steer was then dropped, with Bruce placing faith in Orjan Nyland as his first choice.

The Norwegian goalkeeper has continued under Dean Smith since his took over, but has been far from convincing in the Villa goal.

The Birmingham Mail have revealed that there is an option to recall Steer in January, which is something for Smith to consider ahead of the winter transfer window.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper has made 12 appearances across all competitions under Lee Bowyer, with 11 of those coming in League One.

Steer has kept four clean sheets in that time for the Addicks, helping Bowyer’s side to sixth in the table and into play-off contention once again.

Whilst Steer and Charlton battle to secure play-off football, the goalkeeper’s parent-club are struggling in the bottom half of the Championship after an inconsistent start to the season.

Smith has won two of his four fixtures in-charge at Villa Park and will be hoping for his first away points this weekend at Derby County.

The Verdict

This is a decision that Villa have to get right in January, as Nyland has been costing them points so far this season.

Steer might not be the long-term option at Villa Park, but he could help steady a ship in January.
