Aston Villa face an uphill battle to keep hold of loanee Josh Onomah in January, with parent club Tottenham exploring the possibility of bringing the youngster back to North London in the new year.

The midfielder has played nineteen times in the league for Villa this season, scoring three times and providing a further assist, with his form alerting the attentions of Spurs boss, Mauricio Pochettino.

Onomah, who has represented England at various youth stages, has impressed during his time at Villa Park, with his form helping Bruce’s men into fifth-place approaching the halfway stage of the season.

An U-20 World Cup winner in the summer with England’s successful side, Onomah is held in high-regard by the coaching staff at Tottenham, and has already made an impressive thirteen league appearances for the club since making his first-team bow in 2015.

Pochettino has obviously seen enough to suggest the player can play a role at Wembley this season, telling The Guardian: “We have a possibility to bring them back,” referring to Onomah and fellow youngster Cameron Carter-Vickers, who is currently on loan at Sheffield United.

The Verdict

Onomah has impressed this season for Villa, but has lacked consistency at times.

The 20-year-old has done enough to impress his Tottenham manager however, and after the Argentine handed the player a number of first-team opportunities towards the end of last season, he may now feel ready to afford Onomah even more chances.

His loan spell at Villa has been productive thus far, and with Spurs fighting on multiple fronts, the player would surely receive plenty of game time should he return to the club.

Staying at Villa would guarantee minutes, but with Champions League football potentially on the table for the player, a return to his boyhood club will be a very enticing option.
