Aston Villa face a battle to sign goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on a permanent basis with Cardiff City also interested in the stopper.

The 25-year old has spent the last 18 months on loan at Villa Park from Manchester United where he has impressed and Villa were keen to bring the keeper in on a long-term deal this summer.

Whilst that remains the case, journalist Alan Nixon has revealed that the Welsh side are looking to rival the West Midlands outfit for his signature.

After their remarkable season, they will definitely be able to offer Johnstone Premier League football and that would put them in the driving seat if Villa fail to win promotion.

Steve Bruce's men are in the play-off final where they will play Fulham on Saturday at Wembley for a place in the Premier League.

Johnstone is sure to start the big game after playing a crucial role in Villa's season so far. The keeper has shone with his fine shot-stopping ability and the way he commands his box.

The Verdict

The United goalkeeper has proven himself to be one of the best in his position outside the Premier League and is ready to make the step up regardless of what happens on Saturday.

He appears to have really enjoyed his time at Villa so if they are promoted you would imagine they are in with a strong chance of signing him.

However, Cardiff's interest will be a worry as signing Johnstone has to be a priority for Bruce this summer.
