It is seemingly impossible for Aston Villa to finance a deal for Robert Snodgrass to return to Villa Park next season.

According to a report in the Birmingham Mail, Villa’s attempt to bring Snodgrass to the Midlands permanently is now off, following Saturday’s play-off final defeat to Fulham.

Snodgrass has spent the year on-loan at Villa Park from West Ham United, with the winger making a big impact as Villa finished fourth and reached the play-off final.

The 30-year-old Scottish international scored seven goals and registered 14 assists during his spell with Villa, but was unable to help Steve Bruce’s side to promotion at Wembley, as Fulham ran out 1-0 winners.

Snodgrass will now return to West Ham United this summer, but is likely to be departing permanently ahead of next season.

Bruce was desperate for Snodgrass to return, with Villa Park the winger’s preferred destination.

However, failure to secure Premier League football has left Villa in a difficult financial position, fighting against Financial Fair Play.

A return to Villa Park is now seemingly off the table for Snodgrass.

The Verdict

The consequences of Saturday’s play-off final defeat could be huge for Villa, with Snodgrass just one part of the developments.

The winger had been influential over the last 12 months and most people at Villa Park wanted to see him return next season, which means missing out on him will be a blow.

However, Villa and their supporters will have known the risk of missing out on promotion, with Snodgrass, amongst others, not looking like they will be around next season.
