Aston Villa appear to be winning the race to sign talented Charlton Athletic midfielder Joe Aribo, who is out of contract this summer.

The 22-year-old has been an outstanding performer for the Addicks this season, scoring nine goals, with his displays from an attacking midfield position a major reason why they have reached the play-off final.

Even though they are only 90 minutes away from a return to the Championship, Aribo is expected to depart the London outfit after tomorrow’s game against Sunderland at Wembley.

And, according to The Sun, Aston Villa have managed to get ahead of plenty of rivals as they look to secure an early summer deal, with Dean Smith set to make his mark on the side in the coming months.

Aribo had been linked with Glasgow giants Celtic and Rangers among others, however the report states that Villa are confident of securing a deal for the player.

They also claim a deal will go through regardless of what happens in Villa's own play-off final, which is against Derby at Wembley on Monday, with the winners landing a Premier League place.

The Verdict

This looks as though it would be a great move for all parties and one that you could see happening.

Aribo is a technically-gifted player and one that would thrive in Smith's side as he looks to dominate possession and allows his players freedom.

The obvious concern would be a lack of first-team football if Villa win promotion but the youngster will back himself to make an impact at Villa Park in the years to come.
