A trio of Championship clubs are aiming to take Southampton striker Sam Gallagher on loan, according to Sky Sports News.

Sky sources understand that a number of clubs, including Aston Villa, Birmingham City and Derby County, are in talks with Southampton over a possible season long loan deal for striker Sam Gallagher.

Sam Gallagher signed a new contract with the Saints earlier this summer, ending speculation of a permanent move away from the St Mary's Stadium.

However, his route to the first team is currently blocked by the likes of Manolo Gabbiadini and Charlie Austin.

New Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino is willing to allow the 21-year-old to go out on loan for another season to aid his development again.

The towering 6ft 4in striker was one of the better players for Blackburn Rovers last year as they were relegated.

He scored twelve goals on loan at Ewood Park before penning a new four year deal with Southampton this summer.

The England under-20 international has also previously spent time on loan at Milton Keynes.

Aston Villa, Birmingham and Derby are now three of the clubs set to scrap it out for the youngster's services on loan.

The Verdict

Sam Gallagher is a useful option to have in your squad because of his physical presence, strength and aerial ability.

For Aston Villa, the 21-year-old might be a useful addition with injury concerns for both Jonathan Kodjia and Scott Hogan.

Derby County could be in the market for another central striker for the likes of Matej Vydra, Dave Nugent, Johnny Russell, Andi Weimann, Mason Bennett and Tom Lawrence to work around.

As for Birmingham, they are looking for goal scorers up top and Gallagher would be a solid short-term addition.

As he learns, improves and develops, Gallagher could get to fifteen league goals or more next season.
