Speaking to the Express and Star, James Chester has praised the impact John Terry has had at Aston Villa since his arrival.

Terry ended his long association with Chelsea at the end of the 2016/17 campaign, opting to drop down a division and link up with Aston Villa in the Sky Bet Championship on a 12-month contract.

Steve Bruce has opted to strip Chester of the captaincy and hand the armband to Terry, who captained both Chelsea and England for large spells of his career.

Despite playing just one competitive game for his new club so far, Terry has impressed those at Villa Park, with Chester full of praise for his new captain, he said: “You can see why he's at a top club for so long and won so many things.

“What difference can he make? That’s quite easy to answer.

“It's that winning mentality he's had throughout his career and the demands he asks for every day are going to be huge.”

Despite the arrival of Chris Samba as well this summer, Chester looks to be Bruce’s favoured partner for Terry in central defence, with the 28-year-old featuring alongside Villa’s new captain in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Hull City.

Despite Gabby Agbonlahor giving Villa an early lead in Saturday’s teatime clash, Jarrod Bowen levelled things for Hull in the second-half, ending Terry's hopes of a debut victory

Villa now face Colchester United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening, before returning to Championship action next weekend.

Bruce’s side face Cardiff City, and will be looking to pick up their first three-points of the season against Neil Warnock’s side.

The Verdict

Terry is a quality player and seeing reports of the impression he has made at Villa Park is no surprise.

The 36-year-old’s experience could be vital for Villa this season, as Bruce aims to help the club back to the top-flight after a disappointing year away from the Premier League.

Alongside Chester in central defence, Terry gives Villa have one of the strongest partnerships in the division, which will be essential if they are to have a successful season.
