Aston Villa are considering a potential re-naming of Villa Park, which is sure to divide opinion between the fans of the Championship club.

A source has revealed to Birmingham Live that Villa are under ‘constant negotiation’ - and that selling the naming rights to Villa Park would not be ruled out.

It is clear to see that Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens are focusing on improving the Championship side's revenue streams in the future, but there isn't any immediate plans to change the name of the stadium.

If there was to be a name change of Villa Park, then it would mean that both the club's training ground and stadium's naming rights had been sold off.

Villa rebranded their Bodymoor Heath training ground for the first time earlier this year, so times are certainly changing at the club.

A five-year deal was struck with Recon, the conglomerate of ex-majority owner, Tony Xia, and brought in a total of £4million, the same report revealed.

However, it is understood that the Villa owners would be keen to keep the current stadium name in the title somewhere in a potentially newly named stadium.

Villa will be sweating over meeting the Financial Fair Play regulations at the end of this season and they will be hoping that they can win promotion to the Premier League this season so that they can have some breathing space financially.

They were faced with the prospect of possible administration but a takeover of the club in June eased those worries and they will be keen to focus on matters on the pitch when they aim for their first away points under Dean Smith against an in-form Derby side.

The Verdict:

Some fans will be rightly disappointed with the news of a potential name change of Villa Park, but if it is financially beneficial in the long-term for Aston Villa, then fans are sure to be more accepting of the rebranding of the stadium.

But everyone connected with the club will be fully focused on the 'on-the-field' action and they will hope to make a charge towards the play-offs, starting with a positive result against Frank Lampard's Derby side.
