Aston Villa are considering recalling Jed Steer from his loan spell with Charlton Athletic in the New Year as the club look to solve their goalkeeping issues.

Orjan Nyland has been the man in-charge of the gloves at Villa Park for most of the season, but the Norwegian goalkeeper has been far from convincing and Dean Smith is on the lookout for a new recruit.

According to the Birmingham Mail, Steer is under consideration, with Villa having the option to recall the goalkeeper from Charlton when the January transfer window comes around.

Steer actually started the first game of the Championship season, with the 26-year-old helping Villa to a 3-1 victory over Hull City.

Since then he’s joined Charlton and made a further 16 appearances under the management of Lee Bowyer.

Four clean sheets have been kept in that time, with the goalkeeper helping Charlton to fifth in the table and play-off contention.

Whilst Steer’s loan club are in promotion contention in League One, the club he could return to in 2019 are looking to get themselves back into play-off contention in the Championship.

A six game unbeaten run has lifted Smith’s side to within touching distance of the top-six.

The Verdict

Steer is certainly an option that Smith should be considering for Aston Villa at this stage.

FFP rules are hanging over Villa, so recalling a steady goalkeeper could be a good move and allow Smith to spend on other areas.

There’s been nothing wrong with Steer’s efforts at Charlton and, in all honesty, he’s probably deserving of a chance in the Championship.
