Middlesbrough goalkeeper Darren Randolph has emerged as a target for Aston Villa as Dean Smith looks to bring in a new number one this summer.

Croatian stopper Lovre Kalinic joined the west Midlands side in January but struggled to establish himself as a regular, with Jed Steer the first-choice towards the end of the campaign as Villa won promotion.

Therefore, signing a new keeper has been a priority this summer and several names have been linked with a switch to Villa Park, including Jack Butland, but Villa's interest in him appears to have ended.

So, they will look elsewhere and Telegraph reporter John Percy has revealed that Randolph is a name 'under consideration', along with Tom Heaton and Alex McCarthy.

The Ireland international was brilliant for Boro last season and he was rewarded for his performances as he was named in the Team of the Year.

As well as that, the 32-year-old may appeal to Smith as he has experience of playing in the top-flight with West Ham in the past.

Although, Boro are sure to be reluctant to lose such a key performer ahead of the new season, with Jonathan Woodgate now in charge.

The Verdict

Randolph would be a very safe option for Villa as he is a reliable performer and would handle the step up with ease.

Whilst he might not be the big name that some fans want, he would be a smart signing and would surely be available for much cheaper than some of the alternative names mentioned.

As well as that, it's a position that Villa need to strengthen, even though Steer was superb for the final months of the season.

From the players perspective, the chance to return to the Premier League has to appeal and he will surely be hoping this interest results in a formal bid.
