Aston Villa midfielder Jake Doyle-Hayes has joined Cambridge United on loan until the end of the season, as revealed by Villa’s Twitter feed.
The 20-year-old has been capped up to Under 19 level by the Republic of Ireland, but as yet hasn’t broken into the Villa first team. He joins teammate Rushian Hepburn-Murphy at the Abbey Stadium and will be hoping for senior football to further his chances at Villa Park. He’ll go straight into the squad for the vital clash with Cheltenham Town this weekend
Cambridge are managed by Colin Calderwood, the former Spurs defender, and he’s putting his trust in Villa’s youth to help his side secure their League Two status. They’ve struggled all season, never in the bottom two but always on the cusp of a relegation battle.
Hepburn-Murphy has been with the U’s since mid Janaury and has made three appearances so far, without registering a goal. They’re currently fifth from bottom of the basement division, five points clear of Macclesfield in the final relegation place.
Building a successful team is about balance, youth and experience blended properly. If you overload on either you lack certain qualities.
Cambridge are bringing in some real talent, both the Villa lads are well thought of, but they must make sure they keep experience running through the team. Gary Deegan is one in midfield who pins everything together and perhaps Doyle-Hayes can learn from the combative Irishman.
