Aston Villa have today confirmed that winger Andre Green has returned to the club after a loan spell with League One side Portsmouth.

Green made the move to Fratton Park at the end of August and was due to stay for the duration of the season but has made just six League One appearances under Kenny Jackett in that time, scoring once.

He has had a bit more success in the cup competitions, scoring in both FA Cup appearances for the club as well as bagging two in four EFL Trophy outings.

Prior to his loan move, Green had made 31 appearances for his parent club, scoring once, but is yet to play under new manager Dean Smith.

A bit of a lull has hit Villa's form in recent weeks, winning just once in their last seven matches, falling behind in the race for a top six place in the process.

They now sit in 12th, five points behind Derby County who currently occupy the final play-off spot.

The verdict

I think this makes sense.

Whilst Green had shown himself to be a quality operator during his time with Portsmouth, he was not getting sufficient game time.

He would therefore probably be better off working closely with Smith at the club and giving the likes of Bolasie and El Ghazi a bit more competition.
