Aston Villa have confirmed that Frederic Guilbert has completed his move to Aston Villa from French side, Caen.

As part of the deal the defender will be loaned back to Caen for the remainder of the season, which might come as a surprise to some Villa supporters.

Dean Smith's side could benefit from having more depth in defensive areas, but he'll have to remain patient to see his new signing in action for Villa.

Guilbert has played for both Bordeaux and AS Cherbourg earlier in his career, so he'll be keen to settle into life at Villa Park when he links up with the squad in the summer.

He could well be a Premier League player by that time as well, with Dean Smith's side mounting a serious charge for the Play-Offs.

Aston Villa have already loaned out a number of young players on deadline day, which has been frustrating for supporters, many of whom would have hoped that they could play a part in Villa's promotion push this season.

The Verdict

This could be a smart bit of business by Dean Smith.

Guilbert has impressed with Caen and he could play a starring role for Aston Villa next season when he returns to the club from his loan spell.

But I feel as though they could have benefitted from having him in their side this season.
