Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce is confident about finalising a deal for Stoke City midfielder Glenn Whelan soon, according to The Birmingham Mail.

After unveiling John Terry as their latest new signing, Aston Villa have now diverted their attention towards other targets.

This includes Glenn Whelan of Stoke and Steve Bruce believes that he will be the next arrival in B6.

After having a £500,000 bid rejected for Glenn Whelan last month, Aston Villa are now thinking of doubling that fee.

There is still a long way to go before this deal is sealed but Steve Bruce remains positive.

The 33-year-old would add some experience and steel to the Aston Villa midfield ranks.

His arrival might be offset by some departures in that area, though.

Aston Villa currently have Henri Lansbury, Conor Hourihane, Mile Jedinak, Jordan Veretout, Gary Gardner and Aaron Tshibola all vying for the central-midfield spots.

However, Bruce still wants to bring in Glenn Whelan to improve his options in the middle of the park.

Steve Bruce is working hard to secure a deal for the Republic of Ireland international, who brings bags of experience with him.

Glenn Whelan has played 81 times for his country and has almost 300 Premier League appearances under his belt.

With over 500 senior appearances to his name, Glenn Whelan can bring plenty to the Aston Villa midfield and impart his knowledge on young stars like Gary Gardner and Aaron Tshibola.
