Aston Villa are set to confirm the signing of Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Kortney Hause today, according to the Daily Telegraph's John Percy.

The 23-year old had also been chased by their Black Country rivals West Brom, but it is Dean Smith's Villa now looking to be in pole position to sign the former Wycombe Wanderers man on a half season loan.

He's made 68 appearances for Wolves since joining from the Chairboys in 2013, but struggled for game time last season as they romped to the Championship title.

This season he's been marginalised further, failing to make the squad for their Premier League assault and appearing just twice in the EFL Cup.

Aston Villa are crying out for central defenders, a point laid bare this weekend when Alan Hutton was forced into action in the middle of defence. They lost 3-0 to Swansea in the FA Cup, highlighting the problem area for Smith to implement changes.

Hause is likely to go straight into the squad for their clash with Wigan this weekend as they look to improve on their current league position of tenth.

The Verdict

Villa will be delighted to get this one over the line, they desperately need a decent centre back or two to bolster their ranks. They've lost games this season that they shouldn't have lost due to their shortcomings, plus the epic 5-5 draw with Forest which they should have won.

Hause isn't the sort of big name that Steve Bruce would have targeted, but he is a Dean Smith signing, young and full of potential.
