Aston Villa are on the brink of signing goalkeeper Orjan Nyland from Bundesliga 2 side Ingolstadt, according to the Daily Star

A new goalkeeper has been rumoured to be joining the club after the club did not allocate the No.1 jersey to any current player when squad numbers were revealed earlier today.

Nyland was a standout performer in the Bundesliga 2 last season, keeping 10 clean sheets in 30 games for Ingolstadt.

The 27-year-old has been at the German club for three seasons after moving from FK Molde in 2005.

Aston Villa recently brought in Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Andre Moreira on a season-long loan and already had Jed Steer at the club.

Bruce failed in his attempts to bring Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone back to the club for a third year on-loan at Villa Park, with Villa's financial situation at the time stopping that from happening - Johnstone moved to West Brom instead.

The Verdict

Villa certainly need a new goalkeeper and this seems like a decent option.

Goalkeepers tend to adapt to Championship football much more easily than outfield players, so that should not be too much of a concern for the fans.

A more experienced safe bet may have been preferable, but Nyland is not a bad signing at all.
