Said Benrahma is edging closer to a move to Aston Villa, report The Express.
Brentford have held firm in regard to interest in the Algerian all summer, but it appears Dean Smith may finally land his man, whom he signed for The Bees only last summer.
Speculation grew after Benrahma was left out of the squad in Saturday’s match against Birmingham, but manager Thomas Frank suggested a lack of fitness was the real reason behind his omission.
It is clear to see why the Bees value the 23-year-old so highly. He was key to their attack last season and scored 10 goals, whilst assisting 15, and he was missed in their defeat on the weekend.
No fee has yet been mentioned for Benrahma, but with Neal Maupay also on the verge of departing Brentford could have several million pounds to work with in the final week of the transfer window.
Losing Benrahma this late on would be a big blow to Brentford and it could be a factor in causing their season getting off to a delayed start.
They will have their sights on targets but it is a gamble bringing in replacements this late, as they will need time to get used to the club, the manager and their teammates.
However, it could be better than keeping hold of unhappy players like Benrahma and Maupay, and whilst it is difficult to accept losing their best players, Brentford always seem to find a way to recover.
It may be hard to replace the number of goals Benrahma contributed to, but given the funds Brentford have they should be able to identify another effective winger.
