Keith Wyness, the Chief Executive Officer of Aston Villa, has spoken to the club’s official website about his desire to grow the Villa brand overseas.

Describing the club has ‘the mothership’, Wyness said they need to get everything right at Aston Villa first before they go out and acquire other clubs.

Speaking to Villa’s website, the 59-year-old said:

“The strengthening of the Aston Villa brand abroad is very much on the agenda. It’s something I keep a close eye on. I have had several discussions with some groups overseas.

“I think what we have learnt is that you need to get the “mothership” right first – which is Aston Villa Football Club. It’s about getting it right here before we go out and acquire.

“It could be anytime soon that we dabble into those markets. It’s not Premier League dependent. We already have contacts and advanced negotiations on a number of areas but nothing absolutely concrete just yet.”

Wyness is clearly hoping to follow in the footsteps of clubs such as Manchester City, who have teams in the USA and Australia, in creating a global footballing dynasty.

Steve Bruce’s team return to action this weekend against Brentford.

The Verdict

This is a tall order for a Championship club to make but, if any club at this level could do it, it would be Aston Villa.

They are still a big club and although they’ve had their financial issues recently, they do have some draw power to get others involved in the project.

If this happens, the Villa dynasty could not only see the club return to the Premier League but return to the top of the mountain of English football for the first time since 1981.
