Steve Bruce has ruled out Aston Villa making a late move for David McGoldrick this month, with the Villa Park boss admitting the forward’s style is not what his side need, as reported by the Birmingham Mail.

Villa have lost Jonathan Kodjia to a season-ending injury, and with reliance of Scott Hogan and Keinan Davis to deliver goals, Bruce was keen to add another forward to his squad this month.

However, Villa missed out on the signing of Leonardo Ulloa, who opted for a return to Brighton and Hove Albion rather than a loan move to the Sky Bet Championship, with Bruce’s search for another striker stretching into the final days of the window.

When asked about the possibility of bringing McGoldrick to Villa Park, Bruce admitted the 30-year-old Ipswich Town forward was a player he admired, but ruled out a move, he said: “No, not for me. I see him as a No.10 and we’ve got a few players in that position. I like him but if we’re going to bring somebody in it will be a typical No.9.”

So far this season McGoldrick has featured on 21 occasions for Ipswich in the Championship, scoring six goals and assisting a further five, helping Mick McCarthy’s side to 12th in the league table after 29 fixtures.

Whilst McGoldrick and Ipswich are battling to work their way into the play-off mix, Villa will be looking to put pressure on the top-two tonight when they face Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

The Verdict

McGoldrick is an experienced Championship forward, who will have the respect of many mangers in the division.

However, Bruce hits the nail on the head regarding the 30-year-old – he is a second striker rather than somebody who leads the line, and with Villa having the likes of Jack Grealish at the club, he isn’t what they need this month.
