Former Chelsea manager and player Roberto Di Matteo is Aston Villa’s new manager, and Steve Clarke will be his assistant, confirms BBC Sport.
Di Matteo won the Champions League with Chelsea, the first and only time in the club’s history, back in 2012, but was still sacked by trigger-happy owner Roman Abramovich the following year, much to the disgust of Chelsea fans worldwide.
After a disastrous stint as Schalke manager was cut short in 2015, the Italian has been out of work, but has now found a job as manager of recently relegated Aston Villa.
Villa, who sacked both Remi Garde and Tim Sherwood last season, were comfortably relegated from the Premier League last season, and it looks like Di Matteo will have a big job on his hands rebuilding this team and getting them back to the top flight.
Joining him in the dugout will be Steve Clarke, also formerly of Chelsea, who was sacked by currently managerless Reading last season.
This news that Di Matteo is joining Villa, makes it official that the Sky Bet Championship has the most amount of Champions League winning managers out of any division in world football.
