Stoke City defender Bruno Martins Indi could depart the club this summer, prompting Gary Rowett to scour the market for centre-backs, The Stoke Sentinel reports.

Having snapped up Oghenekaro Etebo and Benik Afobe already this summer, Rowett will now turn his attention towards defenders as he seeks a partner for Ryan Shawcross at the back.

With Martins Indi attracting attention across Europe, the Dutchman may not be at the club come the start of the new season.

The 26-year-old wants to play in a top division so that he can keep his place in the Holland squad but with a long-term contract until 2022 at the bet365 Stadium, it is unclear what will happen with him this summer.

But Rowett is preparing for his departure and has already sent Kevin Wimmer out on loan to Hannover 96.

Stoke could consider three centre-backs to partner Shawcross with one potentially being promoted from within.

Souttar, 19, had an impressive loan spell at Ross County in the Scottish Premiership, putting himself in the frame for a first-team spot.

But Stoke could look to buy a new centre-half with Rowett eyeing a reunion with Derby County skipper Curtis Davies.

The other option is Aston Villa's James Chester, who could be up for sale given the club's financial state.

The Verdict

Davies would be a superb addition because him and Shawcross would form arguably the most solid pairing in the division.

But likewise, Chester would combine well with Shawcross and be an excellent signing if they can take advantage of Villa's financial woes to capture him.

Souttar could be in with a shout but it still might be a little early for the Scotland under-19 international.
