Aston Villa are ready to fight Derby County for the signature of Premier League winner Robert Huth, according to the Birmingham Mail.

Villa are said to want the giant German as a replacement for John Terry, who left after one season under Steve Bruce. Huth has recently been released by Leicester City, the club he won a Premier League title with in 2016.

Derby County manager Frank Lampard is also chasing Huth, whom he played with at Chelsea. The 33-year-old won two Premier League titles with the Blues, in 2005 and 2006.

Huth was recently released by Leicester after an injury hit season, one in which he failed to make a single Premier League appearance.

He started out at Chelsea, turning out 62 times in four seasons before a move to Middlesbrough where his game time was once again limited, 63 games in three season.

It was at Stoke where he made his name, a £5m move there in 2009 resulting in five consecutive top-flight seasons in which he made over 30 appearances.

The Verdict

At 33-years old Huth isn't the quickest, but he's been playing top-flight football his entire career and is as experienced as they come. His a towering presence in defence and would bring organisational skills to either side.

His wages might be a stumbling block for Villa, plus he may favour a link up with Frank Lampard, but whichever side gets him will hope they get a fit player, another consideration when taking the risk.
