Aston Villa among the clubs to lose out to Rangers in race for star’s signature

Aston Villa and Derby County missed out on signing Scott Arfield as a free agent, according to Football Insider.

Arfield spent five seasons at Burnley, but he gradually fell down the pecking order as Sean Dyche has kept building up the team every season. However, he still made 18 league appearances this season for a total of 1337 minutes and scored two goals as well assisting another.

Steven Gerrard obviously sees something in him because he is the first signing he has made as Rangers manager, which is his first senior managerial role. This is a huge opportunity for him, but also for Arfield because Rangers are a huge club with ambitions of ending Celtic’s recent dominance.

The Verdict

This is a good move for Rangers because he is Premier League quality, so he could certainly improve the Gers. It’s understandable that he chose Rangers because he gets to play European football with them next season due to them finishing in third, which guarantees a Europa League qualifying spot. Although his old club will also be in that competition due to Dyche’s brilliance.

Villa and the Rams are unfortunate to miss put on such a bargain, but they can’t contend with European football.
