Sky Bet Championship side Aston Villa are set to rival Fulham and Celtic in the race to sign Gary Hooper, according to reports from the Sun.

The 31-year-old was recently let go by Sheffield Wednesday upon the expiry of his contract at Hillsborough, and was one of six players to be let go by the club as Steve Bruce looks to rebuild his squad in the summer.

The forward had made just six appearances for the Owls this season having spent numerous spells on the sidelines with injuries, but leaves the Yorkshire club having netted 31 times in just short of 90 games.

Hooper has since been linked with a move back to Celtic, a club he knows well having scored 63 goals in 90 appearances for the SPFL club between 2010 and 2013.

But now, reports have emerged claiming that Dean Smith's Aston Villa are contemplating a move for the player, who will be available to sign on a free transfer in the summer.

Relegated Premier League side Fulham have also been credited with an interest in the striker, whilst Neil Lennon will look to make Hooper his first signing as Celtic boss if he is given the job on a permanent basis.

Villa could well be playing in the Premier League next season, with Smith's side set to face West Bromwich Albion in the play-off semi-finals over two legs.

The Verdict

I was surprised to see Hooper let go by Sheffield Wednesday, but injuries have really ruined his chances of being a key player under Bruce.

I think that, on a free transfer, Hooper is probably one of the best options out there for any team.

His goalscoring record in the Championship is impressive, and he could provide some real competition up front next season, especially with Tammy Abraham set to return to Chelsea.
